Twitter made easy

Simple Twitter Guide In Protest At The Barry Incinerator

Twitter is a superb way to campaign as everything is public. Large companies employ teams of people to look at social media, which is why you can write something without using the company’s twitter handle and yet, they will pick it up! The official twitter of DIAG is @stopbarryburnin – if this can be included in tweets that you send then they can be retweeted by the admins.

Hashtags #

A hashtag is simply a way to categorise a tweet’s topic(s), which then makes it easier for people to search for other tweets about those topics.
So, if you use the hashtag #ShapeMyFuture, your tweet will be linked to other tweets that have used this hashtag when it is searched for (simply press on this to bring up other tweets – click here to test).
For the incinerator campaign you will have seen a number of different hashtags used but please use #ShapeMyFuture and #GoodThinking. Why? These are the hashtags that Aviva use. They use #ShapeMyFuture for their pensions arm and #GoodThinking generally. This means that them, people who are thinking of using their product, investors etc will see our stream of negative Aviva tweets alongside Aviva’s own marketing!

Limited Characters

Character limits on twitter are limited to 140 characters, which is a good thing and a bad thing!
A few tips on making your character limits count are……

Bitly

You may want to post an on-line article or a video but find that the link takes up a large portion of your limited characters on twitter. Use the website https://bitly.com/ to shorten your links. If you put the web address into this site, it will shorten it for you, yet the person clicking on your link will still get to the article/petition/video etc. You simply copy and paste your long link into the ‘Paste a link to shorten it’ box. Then press ‘copy’ and you can now use the shortened link in your tweet. This Guardian article regarding air pollution ‘https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/may/06/appalling-air-pollution-plan-new-court-battle’ turns into this ‘http://bit.ly/2pQ8aiG’ when you put it through bitly.

Tag a photo

If you want to let lots of people know about your tweet, then the limited characters available will restrict this. So……why not add a photograph? This could be a general incinerator flyer or any other photo you think fits best. You are then able to ‘tag’ up to 10 people into the photo!

Use Quote Retweet not just Retweet – this gives you more characters to use to add to the original tweet or to make an argument against it!

Useful Twitter Handles

Twitter is a superb way to get your message out to a lot of people, very quickly. The reach you can achieve in a short space of time is only limited to the amount of active twitter users there are! Early on in the campaign, Michael Sheen signed and Retweeted a link to our petition. 275,000 of his followers instantly saw our campaign! Please have a look at the list of twitter handles that I have grouped as best I can. This includes celebrities, local business, politicians etc. The more noise we can make, the further we can spread our support and celebrity/business/political public support gives greater weight and credibility to our campaign.
