TACKLING COMMON INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION WARNING
These installations require a specific skill set; attempting this task without the assistance of a professional could lead to potential hazards and unforeseen expenses.
By engaging with this article, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and agree to the terms and conditions stated here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The scenarios outlined below highlight various difficulties I have encountered during installations, which may reflect your own experiences and offer practical solutions.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 1: UNEVEN SURFACES
RESOLVING THE ISSUE OF UNEVEN SURFACES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the required size for the gate and any extensions needed. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder equipped with a metal/aluminium disc to accurately cut the gate, adhering to the measurements indicated in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you plan to eliminate and reinsert it into the cut part of the gate to ensure proper fitting of the tension knob.
- This procedure will be clearer once you have the gate in your possession.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 2: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL

PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW:
-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are adequately prepared for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure thoroughly BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are completed and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 3: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES
NAVIGATING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR BABY GATE INSTALLATION
While installing baby gates outdoors may seem like a quick and economical choice, it could also void the warranty on these gates.

I recommend that outdoor installations of baby gates be regarded solely as a temporary and budget-friendly solution. This could potentially result in the cancellation of your gates’ warranty.
-
- Baby gates are designed specifically for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor application due to potential exposure to adverse weather conditions.
- This restriction is clearly outlined in the warranty documentation that accompanies each product.
- Failure to comply with warranty terms will result in the loss of warranty coverage.
For a sustainable solution, consider engaging a contractor who specialises in security or latch gating systems. Although this may incur higher costs, it remains the most effective strategy.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these measures can fully prevent rust; however, they aim to extend the lifespan of the gate in South African weather conditions.
Regular maintenance every one to two months can significantly lower the risk of rust.
To reduce rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to these guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover the base surfaces as well.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will facilitate water drainage and avert rust from accumulating within the hollow gate, where moisture can gather at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to prevent moisture build-up.
- Apply a light layer of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow it to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product instructions.
- Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted surfaces.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be covered with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
